Thanks! That is a great question. I don’t know if it is as much because things are data-driven as much as the fact that industry and being industrious is a process of simplifying and making things more efficiently. At some point efficiency trumps beauty. We prioritize cost over beauty and justify paying less. We do this with food, clothes and our houses.
Brent, I am always amazed by your work and respect you show for the artists/craftsmen whom devoted their lives to the trade we call construction. I have gained my own respect for these individuals when I look the detail that goes into bringing life into a piece of wood! My wife and I purchased a quarter sawn Roll top deck CIRCA 1910. It is truly a work of art. And to think of Oak furniture during this period was thought of as a poor man’s wood as people of stature purchased mahogany or other species of wood. I would not take any amount of money for our roll top not just because the sentimental value but for its true beauty!!! Keep doing what you’re doing! You yourself are a “lost art” in this space we refer to as design!!!
I started delving into what was wrong with much of our modern-day architecture several years ago now, and instinctually I knew that it had something to do with forgetting or intentionally disregarding the past. I completely agree with you — we must integrate the past in order to build a more beautiful future.
